Melvin Lee Thompson, born December 24, 1961, to Mamie
Thompson and Clifton Coleman of Skene, MS. He united with Damascus Baptist Church at an
early age. Melvin departed this earthly life on October 11, 2025. He graduated from Shaw
Highschool (Class of 1979) as Salutatorian and continued through to completion at Alcorn State
University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. While being an Alcorn State Brave, he
would go on to meet his loving wife, Sandra Faye Washington, married July 5, 1985. After
graduation, his path led him to the Army where his 30 plus year career would see him retire
honorably as Sargent First Class with numerous accolades and commendations along his
journey. Throughout his life, he dedicated his career to the advocacy of education and growth
for the future in any all walks of life, troubled youth to adult education services. As of recent, he
found purpose through it work with Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District.
Proceeding him in his entry to heaven: his father, Clifton Coleman, siblings, Sarah Holloway,
Vera Neal, Cleo Coleman, and Murlene Francis. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Sandra
Thompson and children: Derrick Thompson, Tiffany Thompson, Marques Thompson, and
Martavian Thompson. He is further survived by his mother, Mamie Thompson, mother-in-law,
Leola Washington, siblings: Diane Thompson, Kelvin Thompson, (special cousin/brother) Mose
Thompson, Johnny Coleman (Pearl), Robert (Mary Coleman), Clara Gibson, Geralldine (Walter)
Goss and Patricia Wright along with his in laws: Lee William and Donna Newell with the former
proceeding him in heaven, Johnny Lee and Delois Washington, Willie James Washington, Lee
Shelton Washington, Dorothy Jean Porter who proceeded him heaven, Beverly Joyce Cooley,
Velma Ann Terrell as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
