Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Eugene Edward Rawls was the fifth of six children to the late Augustine Curry Sr. and the first of two children to the late Mable Lee Rawls. From a young age, Eugene stood out for his inquisitive nature and warm spirit.
Eugene graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 2017, then completed the Project Search Program at the University of Southern Mississippi. He found purpose and pride working at the university beginning in 2019, where his passion for learning flourished.
Eugene was a lifelong learner, fascinated by electronics and drawn to the charm of thrift store discoveries. A devoted film enthusiast, he built a vast personal collection of over 300 movies, ranging from the golden age of cinema in the 1930s to contemporary classics. His love for Star Wars and his dream to reopen a Blockbuster video store embodied his nostalgic heart and visionary mind. Through film, he sought connection, conversation, and community.
Above all, Eugene treasured his family. Moments shared with his siblings, father, and especially his mother brought him immense joy. Affectionately known as a “moma’s boy,” Eugene was a source of light and laughter at every family gathering.
On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Eugene transitioned into eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother Alberta Putman, grandmother Otharee Harris, grandfather Twilly Curry Sr., brother Augustine Dexter Curry, and uncles James Curry, Twilly Curry Jr., and Robert Stewart Sr.
He is survived by his cherished family, including three brothers, David Curry, Justin Curry and Augustine (Marie) Curry Jr. His sister, Kimberly Levy, His grandmother, Pauline Stewart. He is also remembered by two uncles, Willie Clark and Eugene (Angela) Stewart, after whom he was named, along with three aunts, Mary Scott, Faith Harris, and Odessa Ammons. Additionally, he leaves behind a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a vast circle of friends and loved ones.
